Evidence of our Salvation: Walking in Love

AM I SAVED?  That is, am I totally certain that if I had died last night I would be in the presence of my Creator at this moment and forever more?  Here is the truth; either you are saved or you are not.  How do I know that?  Because God says so and He wants you to know you are saved. (1 John 5:11–13)

Here is the objective truth; God loved you so much that He sent Jesus, His one and only son, to save you from the guilty verdict hanging on your chest that says “I’m a sinner by nature and by choice”.  You see, you were born a sinner and you choose to continue sinning.  For that reason you cannot enjoy the glory of God and are on your way to eternal separation from God.  The good news is that God offers you life, eternal life.  How can you get it?  (1) Realize you are a sinner.  (2) Ask God for forgiveness for your sin and turn away from it. (3) Confess that Jesus is God and Lord and believe that He rose from the dead and lives today.  Then you will be saved!

What’s next?  Nothing; you are already saved.  Enjoy a life of joy and fellowship with Him.  Now, it should be evident that you’re saved.  The evidence is there as an act of worship to Him, a reminder to you and a witness to the world.  Salvation is all based on God.  He planned it.  He pursued it.  He provided it.  And He will bring it to perfection.  How does He bring it to perfection?  He gives us His Spirit to guide us (John 16:13), to shape us (Galatians 5:22–23) and to empower us (Acts 1:8).  You do the rest.  You surrender your life to Him who saved you so that His Spirit may lead you in all truth, so that you the fruit of His presence in you becomes obvious and so the world know that you are new creation in Christ Jesus.

The first evidence of our salvation is that we walk in the Light.  God is light and there is no darkness in Him, God is holy and there is no un-holiness in Him, we walk in holiness because He is holy and being holy allows us to have ongoing fellowship with Him and others.  You know you are walking in light when you continue to recognize your sinfulness and confess sin when it creeps in instead of disregarding it.  This allows God’s cleansing process to work holiness in you and it keeps your fellowship with Him and others intact and honest.

Secondly, we walk in love. (Ephesians 5:1–2)  What is love?  Love is an expression.  In the Greek language love is expressed in various forms.  There is the “eros” love which is refers to the physical, sensual desire or longing.  There is the “phileo” love which refers to the affectionate regard or friendship.  There is the “storge” love which refers to the natural affection felt by relatives.  And there is the “agape” love which refers to a selfless unconditional love.  This love can only be properly experienced by God’s children and this is the love that we are to offer to our brethren every day of our lives.  Love is not just an expression; Love is a Person. (1 John 4:16, NKJV)  As we walk in love we are experiencing the presence and influence of our God.  He is working in us to be more Christ-like when we express unconditional love to our brethren.  Loving one another is walking hand in hand with the Father as He shows the world that as He loves us and we love one another He also loves them. (1 John 4:12)  How do we know we love one another?  Loving one another has many faces.

One of those faces is our willingness to hold what we own and cherish with an open hand, ready to put it in the hands of a brother or sister in need. Nothing you call yours belongs to you.  It all been entrusted to you for your enjoyment but also to accomplish God’s purposes in this world so, be ready to let go of it for God’s glory and for the love for a brethren.  (1 John 3:16-19)

We know we are saved by the love we express towards one another. (1 John 3:14) We also conquer the fear of tomorrow when we express the love of God.  The love we learn from this world is scary at best. (1 John 2:15–17) But God’s love in us and through us gives us victory over this world and its influence and it gives us hope of a great future. (1 John 4:17–19)

You know you are saved because you did not, could not earn your salvation; it was given to you by God in Jesus Christ and you can’t change that.  You know you are saved because you walk in the light; you walk in holiness keeping a perfect fellowship with God and your brethren.  You know you are saved because you walk in love; you are constantly looking for ways to fellowship with your brethren and finding ways to express the selfless and unconditional love of God through you.  You know you are His.  Or don’t you?
