RIGHTEOUSNESS I — Proverbs Part XXII
RIGHTEOUSNESS; LIVING RIGHT WITH GOD
We are going through the whole book of Proverbs and we when we got to chapter 10 I had to stop going verse by verse because it became very topical on my. So I had to go topical on it and today I am going to start a view Sunday messages on "Righteousness." We are going to talk about righteousness, living right with God.
So I am going to invite you to open your Bible, to access your devices to Proverbs chapter 10 and we are there... we are going through all the places. Now before I go there, I think it's fair for me to say, well if I ask the typical church goer today the meaning of righteousness, what is righteousness, the reality is that those who grew up in the times of Sunday school and attended regular Bible studies, you may have good idea of what righteousness is but most of us or most of you here if you ask about righteousness you will have different notions about what righteousness is all about and you are totally right. This is... I mean righteousness is such a dynamic word, is such a multi-faceted concept that it is hard to give one meaning that covers it all. It is a very dynamic word and then you have a word in the Old Testament and you have another word in the New Testament or a few words throughout the Bible and they are used on different occasions.
One thing I can tell you, the book of Proverbs uses the term righteous or righteousness a whole lot. I have the NKJ version - depending on the version you have - but I usually use the NKJ version and in the NKJ version alone I was just counting and I am sure I missed - If found the word righteouse or righteousness 83 times. And it is interesting that it is showing 13 times just in chapter 10 out of those 83 times. So it is a word used a lot.
The most common Hebrew word that translate righteousness is may have come from the Arabic word that means straightness. This meaning will give us the idea that what the word is trying to tell you is that it means an action that conforms to a norm. It is an action that conforms to a norm but as I was doing the study I asked myself, who determines norm? Who determines the norm then? I mean because the definition is kind of out there. An action that conforms to a norm but who determines the norm.
Proverbs 10 Modern English Version (MEV)
The Proverbs of Solomon
10 The proverbs of Solomon.
A wise son makes a glad father,
but a foolish son is the grief of his mother.
2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing,
but righteousness delivers from death.
3 The Lord will not allow the soul of the righteous to famish,
but He casts away the desire of the wicked.
4 He becomes poor who deals with a slack hand,
but the hand of the diligent makes rich.
5 He who gathers in summer is a wise son,
but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who causes shame.
6 Blessings are on the head of the just,
but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.
7 The memory of the just is blessed,
but the name of the wicked will rot.
8 The wise in heart will receive commandments,
but a prating fool will fall.
9 He who walks uprightly walks surely,
but he who perverts his ways will be known.
10 He who winks with the eye causes sorrow,
but a prating fool will fall.
11 The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life,
but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.
12 Hatred stirs up strife,
but love covers all sins.
13 In the lips of him who has understanding wisdom is found,
but a rod is for the back of him who is void of understanding.
14 Wise men store up knowledge,
but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.
15 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city;
the destruction of the poor is their poverty.
16 The labor of the righteous tends to life,
the fruit of the wicked to sin.
17 He who keeps instruction is in the way of life,
but he who refuses reproof errs.
18 He who hides hatred has lying lips,
and he who spreads slander is a fool.
19 In the multitude of words sin is not lacking,
but he who restrains his lips is wise.
20 The tongue of the just is as choice silver;
the heart of the wicked is worth little.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many,
but fools die for lack of wisdom.
22 The blessing of the Lord makes rich,
and He adds no sorrow with it.
23 To do mischief is like sport to a fool,
but a man of understanding has wisdom.
24 The fear of the wicked will come upon him,
but the desire of the righteous will be granted.
25 As the whirlwind passes, so is the wicked no more,
but the righteous has an everlasting foundation.
26 As vinegar to the teeth and as smoke to the eyes,
so is the sluggard to those who send him.
27 The fear of the Lord prolongs days,
but the years of the wicked will be shortened.
28 The hope of the righteous will be gladness,
but the expectation of the wicked will perish.
29 The way of the Lord is strength to the upright,
but destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.
30 The righteous will never be removed,
but the wicked will not inhabit the earth.
31 The mouth of the just brings forth wisdom,
but the perverse tongue will be cut out.
32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable,
but the mouth of the wicked speaks what is perverse.
Job 4:17 Modern English Version (MEV)
17 ‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God?
Can a man be more pure than his Maker?
Romans 3:21-25 Modern English Version (MEV)
Righteousness Through Faith
21 But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets. 22 This righteousness of God comes through faith in Jesus Christ[a] to all and upon all who believe, for there is no distinction. 23 For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God has set forth to be a propitiation through faith, in His blood, for a demonstration of His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins previously committed,
- Romans 3:22 Or through the faith of Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 7:2-9 Modern English Version (MEV)
2 Keep my commandments and live,
and my teaching as the apple of your eye.
3 Bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
and call understanding your kinswoman,
5 that they may keep you from the immoral woman,
from the seductress who flatters with her words.
6 For at the window of my house
I looked through my casement,
7 and saw among the simple ones,
I discerned among the youths,
a young man void of understanding,
8 passing through the street near her corner;
and he went the way to her house
9 in the twilight, in the evening,
in the black and dark night.
Proverbs 7:20 Modern English Version (MEV)
20 he has taken a bag of money with him,

13 “When I shut up the heaven and there is no rain, or when I command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence on My people, 14 if My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
Matthew 6:16-18 Modern English Version (MEV)
Teaching About Fasting
16 “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces so they may appear to men to be fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. 17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so that you will not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
Matthew 26:41 Modern English Version (MEV)
41 Watch and pray that you enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

The Healing of a Boy with a Demon
14 When they came to the crowd, a man came to Him and knelt before Him, saying, 15 “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers terribly. He often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16 I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not heal him.”
17 Then Jesus answered, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.” 18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and he came out of him. And the child was healed instantly.
19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast him out?”
20 Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. And nothing will be impossible for you. 21 But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
Joshua 1:8 Modern English Version (MEV)
8 This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth. Meditate on it day and night so that you may act carefully according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way successful, and you will be wise.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 Modern English Version (MEV)

Hebrews 4:12 Modern English Version (MEV)
12 For the word of God is alive, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Romans 10:17 Modern English Version (MEV)
17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Romans 10:14-15 Modern English Version (MEV)
14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring good news of good things!”[a]
Acts 2:42-47 Modern English Version (MEV)
Life Among the Believers
42 They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in the prayers. 43 Fear came to every soul. And many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 All who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 They sold their property and goods and distributed them to all, according to their need. 46 And continuing daily with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
